NCTify’s Journal 29 August 2009

August 29th, 2009 by NCTify

After uploading Loving Dream, my last work in atonal music, and waiting for it to get published, I decided to go back to an unfinished composition inspired by “The Grave of the Hundred Head”, a poem by Rudyard Kipling. This song has been giving me trouble ever since its themes materialized on the staff. I am still undecided about the instruments I should use and even worse about the underlying harmony. The first stanza of the poem is tragic enough to call for a sobbing oboe, but a violin sounds more lyrical. In the exposition, the key alternates between C major and its relative A minor. I still do not know if it should be a string pad with sustained notes or the harp that would give life to the harmonic structure. I think I have to experiment a lot with the instrumentation before something interesting has surfaced.
